The constructions stabilized the coast and safeguarded populations long tormented by severe coastal erosion. Marked erosion escalated in 2012, threatening to deprive Benin of more than 12027 km² of its territorial waters. Cooperation between Benin and Togo reversed the threats. And now, the ocean has receded back 200 meters from its position in November 2022, eliminating the risks of sea surge-related floods. Recreational developments are planned post-stabilization.
